Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see an osteopath?

No referral is required. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners, which means you can book directly without seeing a GP first. However, we welcome referrals from doctors, specialists, and other health professionals if part of your care team.

Is osteopathy covered by private health insurance?

Yes. Osteopathy is covered under most private health insurance extras policies. If you have appropriate cover, you can claim a rebate on the spot using our HICAPS terminal—just bring your private health card to your appointment.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing you can move in (e.g. gym shorts or leggings and a t-shirt). Depending on your condition, you may be asked to remove certain outer layers so we can assess and treat the area effectively.

What happens during the first appointment?

Your first session includes a detailed medical history, a full physical examination, hands-on treatment, and a personalised care plan. We’ll explain everything as we go and make sure you're comfortable with each step.

Will treatment hurt?

Most people find osteopathic treatment comfortable, but some techniques may cause mild discomfort or post-treatment soreness—similar to what you might feel after exercise. We always work within your tolerance and adjust our approach as needed.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the nature and duration of your condition. We’ll give you a clear, individualised plan after your assessment, including how many sessions may be required, and how you can support your recovery at home.

Where are you located?

We are located within Get Active gym. 3 Sheather Street, Ballina, NSW.
